Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Answers to the most common questions about ESTA and travelling to the USA.

What is ESTA and what is it for?

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is the online travel authorisation system for the USA. Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries, including Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Singapore, must obtain ESTA before travelling to the USA for tourism, business or transit.

How much does an ESTA application cost?

From 16 October 2026 the ESTA fee is US$40.62. If your application is refused, only the processing fee of US$10.62 is charged. The fee is paid when you apply and is non-refundable. Beware of look-alike websites that charge much more for the same thing.

How long does it take to process an ESTA application?

Most applications receive a decision quickly. If a decision cannot be made straight away, the status shows “Authorization Pending”; check again later and CBP will let you know the outcome. CBP recommends applying as soon as you book your trip and at least 72 hours before departure.

How long is an ESTA valid?

ESTA is valid for 2 years from the date of issue or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During that time you can travel to the USA multiple times, with each stay lasting up to 90 days.

What is the difference between ESTA and a visa?

ESTA is a simplified online authorisation for short stays of up to 90 days. It costs US$40.62 (from 16 October 2026) and you apply online. A US visa requires an embassy or consulate appointment, costs considerably more and allows longer stays, study or work.

Do I need ESTA if I am from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand or Singapore?

Yes. All four countries are part of the Visa Waiver Program. Their citizens need a valid ESTA before travelling to the USA for tourism, business or transit. You must also hold an electronic passport (e-passport).

I speak English but I am not from a Visa Waiver Program country. Can I use ESTA?

No. Eligibility depends on your citizenship, not your language. English speakers from countries outside the Visa Waiver Program, such as India, the Philippines or Nigeria, cannot use ESTA and need a US visa (usually a B1/B2 visitor visa). Check the requirements on travel.state.gov.

Can I use ESTA if I have travelled to certain countries?

Generally not. According to CBP, travellers who have been to Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen on or after 1 March 2011, or to Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, and dual nationals of certain of these countries, are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and must apply for a visa. Limited exceptions apply, for example for official military or government duties of a VWP country.

What happens if my ESTA application is refused?

There is no appeal against an ESTA refusal. To travel to the USA you need to apply for the appropriate visa at a US embassy or consulate. The ESTA fee is not refunded.

Do I need ESTA to transit through the USA?

Yes. ESTA is required for transit through the USA, even if you do not intend to leave the airport. This applies to every connection at a US airport.

What do I need to apply for ESTA?

You need a valid electronic passport, an email address and a payment card (Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Discover) or a PayPal account to pay the fee.

Can I apply for ESTA on my phone?

Yes. The official website works on mobile devices, and there is also an official mobile app, ‘ESTA Mobile’, for iOS and Android.

Does ESTA guarantee entry to the USA?

No. ESTA is only a travel authorisation. The final decision on entry is made by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer when you arrive, who can refuse entry even if your ESTA is approved.

Can I work in the USA on ESTA?

No. ESTA does not allow you to work in the USA. Work requires the appropriate work visa (for example an H-1B). ESTA is only for tourism, business visits and transit.

Do children need ESTA?

Yes. Every child travelling to the USA needs their own ESTA, whatever their age, and their own electronic passport. A parent or legal guardian can apply on the child’s behalf.

Do I need ESTA if I already have a valid US visa?

No. If you hold a valid visitor visa (B1/B2) or another visa that allows you to enter the USA, you do not need ESTA. ESTA is for people travelling under the Visa Waiver Program.

Where can I apply for ESTA?

You can apply only on the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection website (https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/) or in the official app. Avoid third-party services that charge inflated fees.
