How to apply for ESTA

You can apply for ESTA through the official mobile app "ESTA Mobile CBP" or on the official website https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/. This guide takes you through the whole process, step by step.

Before you start — what to have ready

  • A valid biometric passport (e-passport)
  • A smartphone with a camera (to scan your passport and take a selfie)
  • An email address
  • A payment card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover)

Step 1: Download the app or open the website

Download the "ESTA Mobile CBP" app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Alternatively, you can use the website https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/.

Step 2: Scan your passport

Use your phone's camera to scan the photo page of your passport. The app then reads your details automatically from the biometric chip (NFC). If your phone does not support NFC, you can type the details in manually.

Tip: Hold the passport against the back of your phone and keep it still for a few seconds until the data has been read.

Step 3: Take a photo of your face (selfie)

The app asks you to take a photo of your face to confirm your identity. Take it in good light, against a plain background, without glasses or headwear.

Step 4: Complete the form

Answer questions about the purpose of your trip, where you will stay in the United States, your travel history and a set of eligibility (security) questions. The form is short and takes around 20 minutes.

Step 5: Pay the fee (US$40.62)

Pay US$40.62 by credit card, debit card or PayPal. The payment is processed immediately.

Step 6: Wait for the decision

Once you submit the application, you will receive a confirmation email. Most applications are processed within a few hours, but it can take up to 72 hours. You will be notified of the decision by email.

After approval

ESTA is linked electronically to your passport — there is nothing you need to print. Airlines and border officers check your ESTA automatically when you check in and travel.

To find out what happens after you land, see our guides to US border control (CBP questions) and US customs: cash & food.

Important: Apply only on the official website https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/ or through the official "ESTA Mobile CBP" app. Be wary of unofficial websites that charge inflated fees.
