ESTA INFORMATION

How long ESTA is valid

An ESTA authorisation is valid for 2 yearsfrom the date it is issued, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.

Validity rules

  • Valid for 2 years from the date of issue
  • Expires with your passport (if the passport expires sooner)
  • Allows multiple entries to the United States while it is valid
  • Each stay may not exceed 90 days
  • ESTA is linked to one specific passport

When do you need to apply again?

You need a new ESTA application in the following cases:

  • Two years have passed since your ESTA was issued
  • You have been issued a new passport
  • You have changed your name
  • Your citizenship has changed
  • Your sex marker has changed
  • Your circumstances have changed in a way that affects your eligibility

Can I travel on an ESTA that is about to expire?

Your ESTA must be valid when you arrive in the United States. It does not have to cover your whole stay — what matters is that it is valid on the day you arrive. Even so, it is a good idea to apply for a new one well in advance.

How do I check the expiry date?

You can check when your ESTA expires on the official ESTA website of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), using your application number or your passport details.

What if I get a new passport while my ESTA is still valid?

ESTA is linked to one specific passport. If you are issued a new passport (for example because the old one expired or you changed your name), you must submit a new ESTA application and pay the US$40.62 fee again. Your old ESTA is no longer valid.

Tip: Apply for ESTA at least 72 hours before your planned departure so there is enough time for your application to be processed.
